Q:Why is tungsten so hard?
JqueenJewelryA: The molecular bonds between tungsten atoms are exceptionally strong. This makes tungsten the metal with the highest tensile strength and the highest melting point, at 6192°F. Durable and tough, tungsten is highly resistant to scratches, so it requires an even stronger material for the polishing process: diamonds. Tungsten has a 7.5 hardness on the Mohs scale, but tungsten carbide surpasses it at 9-9.5.
